Roads are sometimes blocked off, where you need to go is often clearly marked on the “map” screen and there are also outdoor monsters that discourage lingering around too much too. Even though the very first game gave the player the ability to explore a large town, not only are the levels only accessible in the “proper” order – but the town itself is very subtly designed to funnel you towards them. “ Silent Hill 4” (2004) takes this a step further with a much more strictly-defined level progression where the only area explorable between levels is a tiny hub area.įirst of all, it was always part of the series. “ Silent Hill 3” (2003) has a traditional linear level progression, albeit with a cut-down version of the second outdoor area from “Silent Hill 2” that the player can briefly explore between two levels. Even so, this game is very mildly more linear than the first one. It’s a tiny area, yet one that is easily missed and it contains a healing item that rewards exploration.
